Judge Profile
Mr.
Yap Hon Choong. PJK, PJN (Malaysia)
Mr Yap was born in 1938 and started to "train" dog at age of only twelve. It was a mongrel with some Fox
Terrier background. The dog was not taught how to heel but only sit, stand, down, come, fetch and stay because he didn't know any better then.
Sometime in 1958, he came across the "TRAINING DOGS" by Colonel Konrad Most and learned the theory and practical of training dogs. In 1967 he attended the Crufts show in England and was very impressed with what he saw at the Obedience Trial. Years later he chanced upon "The Koehler Method of Guard Dog Training". Ever since, Mr Yap had used the Koehler's method to train all his dogs. That was in 1976 and there was no obedience trial then in the country. Nonetheless, he trained his dogs just for the fun of it.
From 1992 he started to participate with his Boxer bitch in MKA's Obedience Trials and have never looked back since. He believes that he has been fairly successful in the obedience trials because he was fortunate to have very good dogs. To date, Mr Yap has trained eleven dogs and all had passed the Pre-Novice. Ten of them passed the Novice and four had passed the Intermediate class. Two managed to pass the Open. The dogs were 2 Australian Silky Terriers, 1 Australian Cattle dog, 2 Boxers, 3 Bull Terriers, 1 Doberman , 1 German Shepherd and one Mongrel. Mr Yap attribute these results to hard work and lots of luck.
The Australian Silky Terrier was the first dog in the country to pass the Open when he was 23 months old. Eventually he went on to achieve his Obedience Champion title. The Boxer bitch obtained her CD and CDX on the same day, a feat rarely achieved. She needed just another Open pass to get her Obedience Champion title but sadly she passed away prematurely. Mr Yap is most thankful that these wonderful dogs have somehow found him. "Somebody up there really loves me", Mr Yap believes.
Mr Yap also attended the "Training Judges Course" conducted by Honey Richardson and passed the examinations for judging Classes in Pre-Novice, Novice, Intermediate and Open. In 2001 MKA granted Mr Yap the license to judge the classes mentioned above.
