60th MKA Obedience Trials

May 28th , 2006 - South City Plaza (Rooftop-Level 4B), Seri Kembangan, Selangor

Judge : Mr.
Yap Hon Choong PJK PPN

Judge's Summary:
Allow me to take this opportunity to thank trial manager Mr. Freddy Lim, the calling stewards Mr. Jimmy Lim and Mr. Suren ,  Mr. Paul  TC Chan, National Obedience Chairman, the competitors and others who have in one way or  other helped to make this trial a success.

Twenty-six dogs competed in the Pre-Novice. Eighteen of them passed the test while eight did not qualify. Eleven dogs took part in the Novice. Eight dogs passed while the remaining three did not make the grade. All the three entrants for the Intermediate Class failed to qualify.

The quality of heeling had been good, in some cases excellent. Stays were solid. Dogs forging, lagging behind, or being restrained by tight leash during heeling lost points. It is the same for crooked sit, stand, present, slow response to come on recall, sniffing the ground on heeling. Dogs stopped working incurred a zero score. Handlers adapting pace to dogs’ are also penalized. All the heeling faults are more pronounced at figure eight, which is an exercise that separates the men from the boys, so to speak.

It has been an exciting and pleasant day for me to see such good work being produced. I have enjoyed myself thoroughly and I hope all the competitors feel the same. I would like to thank you all for accepting the results so sportingly. To those who have qualified in their respective classes allow me to say “syabas”. For those who did not make it this time, please do not lose heart. Please remember the saying: “Tomorrow is another day. With tomorrow comes another trial. There are always more tomorrows. And so it goes".

Novice Level Judge Critiques:

1. No. 22. Low Kian Wee, Dobermann. 20, 29, 10, 20, 10, 10 = 99. The team nearly scored full points had not the dog lagged slightly at figure eight. Heel was at brisk pace and the dog was very attentive. This is one dog everyone would like to have. Nonetheless one should realize the amount of hard work the team has put in.

2. No. 6. Tan Ching Loong, Golden Retriever. 16, 26, 10, 19, 10, 10 = 91. Sit was slow and there was occasional wide at turns. Dog lagged at figure eight and sat slowly at halt. Present was crooked during recall. So was the finish.

3. No. 30. James Khoo, Shih Tzu. 15, 26, 10, 20, 10, 10 = 91. The score tied with that of the second. The tied score still remain on the count-back of Heel free plus Recall. Heel on Lead was used to seek out the winner in this instance. During the heel on lead, dog dog missed the stand command, and lagged at turns. The lagging was more obvious in the heel free exercise, especially at slow pace. It was inattentive during the figure eight exercise. Other exercises were well executed.

4. No. 19. Wong Wai Kwan, Yorkshire Terrier. 16, 25, 10, 19, 10,10 = 90. Dog incurred penalty with slow sit and wide at turns during heel on lead, more so at the figure eight. These faults were more pronounced during the heel free exercises. Probably the little fellow had had it after the pre-novice when he did very well. Present was a wee bit crooked during the recall. Nevertheless, this team has great potential.

5. No. 16. Ken Lee, Miniature Schnauzer. 14, 20, 10, 19, 10, 10 = 83. Dog lagged and sat slowly during the heel exercises. These faults were more marked when free heeling, especially at figure eight. This could be due to the earlier rigors of Pre-novice. Present was not straight during the recall.

6. No. 27. Tan Nyek Yoong, Australian Silky Terrier. 16, 17, 10, 16, 10, 10 = 79. Dog forged and lagged alternatively during the heeling exercises. Dog was also wide at turns and sat slowly. Missed the sit command at halt at figure eight. Dog was sniffing the floor on recall with a crooked present. Sat slowly at finish.

7. No. 8. Thong Li Ping, Golden Retriever. 14, 22, 10, 20, 10, 10, (-10) = 86 – 10 = 76. Points were deducted for forging and lagging during the heel on lead and heel free exercises. Dog foul the ring by passing urine and 10 points were taken off from the total score. Dog did well in all the other exercises.

8. No. 3. Yvonne Niap May Foong, Australian Silky Terrier. 10, 18, 9, 19, 10, 10 = 76. Dog missed the stand command, lagged badly and thus was out of heeling position a lot of the time during the heel on lead. Dog lagged more at heel free, sat slowly and was wide at figure eight. Missed the start for the stand-stay. Dog’s name was used twice at recall.

9. No. 2. Yap Peng Siew, Weimaraner. 14, 20, 10, 10, 10, 10 = 74. Dog was slow to sit, down, wide at turns and lagged during the heeling exercises, particularly at figure eight. Response to come was very slow and coming very slowly. Sit was crooked at present and finish. It was very unfortunate that the team just missed one point to qualify.

10. No. 7. Patricia Chen Siew Peng, Golden Retriever. 17, 0, 10, 18, 10, 10 = 65. Dog was crowding the heel on lead exercise, especially at figure eight. The crowding continued during the heel free. Dog lost concentration when executing the slow pace, went down very slowly. On resumption to normal pace, dog ran out of the ring. Dog was thus deemed to have stopped working and this incurred a zero score. Handler moved to help dog during the finish. This team has great potential and one should not be surprised to see them qualify highly in the next trial.

11. No. 38. Yeoh Siew Har, Cross Breed. 12, 22, 0, 0, 10, 10 = 54. Crooked sits, stands and slow downs by dog caused the team to loose valuable points for the heeling exercises. On the top of that dog was out of heeling position by forging and lagging. Dog incurred a zero score for the stand-stay by running away from the ring. Failed to come on the come command.

Intermediate Judge Critique

1. No. 29. James Khoo, Shih Tzu. 31, 10, 20, 30, 14, 10, 0, 10, 10 = 135.  Dog lagged during  the fast pace and at figure eight. Sit during the figure eight routine was hesitant. Sit at the retrieve on flat was slow. Dog did not jump on the return for the retrieve over high jump. Neither did the dog jump over the board jump. Nonetheless this team has good potential and should qualify in the near future.

2. No. 8. Thong Li Ping, Golden Retriever. 28, 8, 18, 0, 13, 25, 0, 0, 10 = 102. Dog was off heeling position due to forging and lagging alternatively. These faults were even more pronounced at figure eight. Lost points when dog moved two legs during the stand for temperament test. Slow to come during the drop on recall. Moved forward twice its body length in distant control. Retrieve on flat ended with a crooked present. Passed the retrieve over high jump, but walked over the broad jump. Dog went down during the out of sight sit-stay though the down-stay was good. With more consistent practice this team should make the grade easily.

3. No. 18. Francis Lau, German Shepherd Dog. 32, 10, 18, 0, 13, 0, 0, 0, 0 = 73. Heeling was at a brisk pace, a lovely sight to watch, albeit with missed down and slight lag at figure eight. Solid on the stand for temperament test. Present was crooked and sit was slow during the drop on recall. Missed the sit command twice for the distant control. Missed the sit twice at the retrieve on flat. Did not jump for the retrieve over high jump or over the broad jump. Broke both the stays exercises. Nevertheless with perseverance, the team can make the grade in future.
